Overall Chicago is massive, architectually beautiful, and yes flat as flat can be...You can look through the town with no problem going South to North, because there are no hills, no bends in the streets. There is a vibriant public art scene, a lot of green initiatives coming out of the mayor's office and a lot of mid-western hipster on single track bikes.
