Oakland's Lake Merritt: Land of Many Uses (2006.01.15)
Oakland's majestic Lake Merritt (3 frame composite, ISO 400). A stunning place to have a wedding a mugging or just a weird encounters with oakland finest citizens. (Also one hell of a place to toss a murder weapon...I mean there are so many in there its going to be hard for anyone to find your specific weapon).
It was a view like this one night that entranced me to sit on a park bench upon lake merrit's shores. Listening to the sounds of Oakland; sweet, sudden, and shrill. A short mexican baker approached me and asked me for the time. I told him it was a half an hour after midnight. He took a seat next to me and began speak about his job at a local bakery and the unruley hours that the management makes him work. We talked about local unions and what he could do to try and get better working conditions for everyone, but then he touched my leg and tried to stick his finger in a hole in my pants. That stopped the conversation as I suddenly remembered had an appointment I needed to get to. I think it was an appointment at the "not having sex with strange mexican bakers meeting." And if his intentions were not clear enough he asked in parting "You no go home with me?" I sternly said "No, no thank you," to which he quickly replied, "No Sexto?"
"Yeah, no sexto, I've got to go meet some friends...the appointment remember?"
