JMT Diary Poem: Day 1 (2006.06.26)

JMT Diary Poem (I'm hoping that by posting this, it will encourage me to finish the other 17 days worth of the poem)

Day 1: July 6th 2003

I breathed as if taking my breath for the first time
As if the past 24 years had not really been life-
Or not really living

Glacier peak and liberty dome lit with the dawns first rays
Their rounded edges shone as the skin of a womans knees
bathed gently in sweat-
a great huge woman.
I walked up her cliff like thighs
being drawn in as if in some sense there was a need to be born again,
a need to return to the womb.

A placental flow rushes down her canyoness thighs
Over Nevada and Vernal Falls
Into the valley where it breeds life
Into the valley where the people are
With their cars and campers
And short lungs that have never understood what it was to breathe
